Brett Ruskin

Master of Ceremonies

Brett Ruskin is the east coast reporter for CBC News Network, appearing daily on television screens from coast to coast. He has experience working in newspaper and radio newsrooms in Halifax and Ottawa. Brett is known for covering a wide range of stories, from military operations to provincial politics to local scientific research. He's also known for quirkier occurrences, like when he helped a pregnant woman in a blizzard or was bitten by the groundhog, Shubenacadie Sam.

Dr. Shawn Thistle


Dr. Shawn Thistle is a chiropractor, speaker, knowledge-transfer leader, entrepreneur & medicolegal consultant. He is Founder & CEO of RRS Education (, a continuing education company providing weekly Research Reviews, informative Seminars & convenient Online Courses for chiropractors, physiotherapists & osteopaths around the world. Shawn also provides expert medicolegal reporting in chiropractic malpractice cases & lectures part-time at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in the Orthopedics Department.

Patrick Thompson


Patrick is a Physiotherapist with LifeMark Health Saint Mary's in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He graduated from Brown University in 1995 with a concentration in Biology. After completing five years in various countries playing professional hockey Patrick then completed a master's degree in physiotherapy at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Patrick treats within a biopsychosocial model and has completed course work and reading on pain science and has training in manual therapy techniques including spinal manipulation and trigger point dry needling. Patrick has practiced vestibular rehabilitation since 2007 and completed advanced training from the University of Emory in 2012. For 7 years Patrick has worked extensively with clients suffering from persistent symptoms related to head injury.

Patrick's lecture, "Approach to Exercise in the Headache Population" mainly focuses on the use of exercise for patients who suffer post-traumatic headache, migraine (including vestibular migraine), and tension headache.

Jennifer O'Brien


Jenn completed her B.Sc. at Mount Allison University in 2012 and then continued her education at the University of Waterloo where she recently completed her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) in 2016. Jenn currently works as a clinical pharmacist at Amherst Pharmasave where she has embarked on many clinical and expanded scope pharmacy practices, such as minor ailment prescribing, injection administration, medication reviews and most recently Pharmacist-led Anticoagulation Management Services. During her time in Ontario Jenn received the Canadian Pharmacists Associations Centennial Leadership Award in 2015 and the Ontario Pharmacists Association Student of Distinction Award in 2016. Since being in practice Jenn has given presentations to seniors in her community on health and wellness, embarked on community outreach initiatives, and most recently sits on the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists Council.

Dr. Linda Ferguson

Sports Medicine

Dr. Ferguson's medical training includes an Honours BSc in Neurophysiology, MD from University of Glasgow (a world leading university for head injury research) where she was trained by the neurosurgeons who devised the Glasgow Coma Scale, a two year ophthalmology residency, and twenty-five years experience in emergency and sports medicine.

She has acted as a team physician for local school and university sports and has cared for athletes at provincial, national and international levels including Olympic and Paralympic levels. She served as a Canadian Team physician for the Canada Games, Commonwealth Games, Torino, Beijing, Vancouver and Sochi Games.

To further her education regarding the management of concussions, Dr. Ferguson attended the University Of Pittsburgh Concussion Center to train with Dr. Michael Collin’s team. She became a Certified ImPACT Consultant and brought back novel, evidence based treatment protocols for optimal concussion management. She built a team of oculovestibular therapists, neuro-optometrists, neuro-psychologists, neurologists, kinesiologists and team trainers. The clinic sees referrals from physicians, WCB and insurance case workers.

She has met with the Nova Scotia Department of Education to devise a standardized return to school plan for students with concussion and has presented numerous education sessions for principals, teachers and university professors, athletes, coaches and parents.

This is a very exciting, dynamic field in medicine. Dr. Ferguson is happy to share some of the latest concussion management strategies.

Dr. Bryan Rade


Dr. Rade is a graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and is the current President of the Nova Scotia Association of Naturopathic Doctors. His practice primarily focuses on cases of chronic infections including persistent Borreliosis and coinfections, autism spectrum disorder, cancer, chronic pain, neurological disorders. He also specializes in challenging cases that do not respond to the majority of treatments. Dr. Rade has pursued additional professional training in a number of fields, including: comprehensive IV therapy, integrative oncology, the biomedical treatment of autism (“DAN” Doctor), CEASE therapy, ozone therapy, advanced pain treatment techniques (prolotherapy, prolozone, neural therapy, neural prolotherapy, platelet-rich plasma and ozonated clot matrix therapy), Low Dose Immunotherapy, Low Dose Allergen Therapy, Endobiogenic Medicine, Biological Medicine and others.
